Job Description
The Vice President of Legal will oversee the company’s legal affairs, providing high-level guidance on all legal matters while ensuring the organization operates within the bounds of applicable laws and regulations and effectively managing legal risks. The VP of Legal will be responsible for setting the company’s legal strategy, building, leading, and managing a high-performing team of legal professionals, fostering a culture of collaboration, excellence, and continuous improvement. This role will report directly to the Chief Financial Officer and will work closely with the executive team, senior leadership team, and other key stakeholders to drive business objectives, protect the company’s interests, and ensure the legal team is aligned with the broader goals of the organization.
Key Job Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and oversee legal strategies to support company goals and objectives while managing legal risks and act as a trusted advisor to senior leadership, providing legal perspectives on strategic initiatives, business opportunities, and risk management.
- Provide expert legal counsel to the executive team, senior leadership, and departments on a variety of business-related legal matters, including corporate governance, regulatory compliance, data privacy, mergers and acquisitions, contracts, intellectual property, and employment law.
- Manage the company’s legal compliance framework, ensuring adherence to laws and regulations in all jurisdictions in which the company operates and maintain best practices for legal risk management, corporate governance, and regulatory compliance.
- Supervise the negotiation, drafting, and execution of contracts and agreements, ensuring compliance and alignment with company objectives.
- Advise on intellectual property, licensing, data privacy and technology agreements, including the oversight of data privacy program to ensure compliance with U.S., Canadian and European data privacy laws as well as industry best practices.
- Manage trademark strategy and enforcement with support of outside counsel for Appcast brands in US and EU.
- Review security documentation for customer engagements.
- Analyze and advise on new products and features throughout the development life cycle to mitigate legal risk and , external, and ensure effective management of external legal counsel.
- Collaborate with business leaders across departments to ensure the legal team is aligned with and supports the broader business strategy.
- Stay updated on legislative changes that affect the company, industry trends, legal developments, and changes in laws and regulations to proactively advise the organization.
- Lead, mentor, and develop the legal team to ensure high performance, continuous learning, and professional growth, ensuring that it functions effectively and efficiently meet the company's needs.
- Oversee and manage outside counsel and manage legal budgets.
Qualifications
- Expertise in corporate law, including mergers and acquisitions, data privacy, intellectual property, commercial contracts, and employment law.
- Proven experience managing complex legal and business challenges and providing strategic guidance to executive teams.
- Experience managing a team of legal professionals and fostering a high-performance, collaborative work environment.
- Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to simplify complex legal issues for non-legal stakeholders and present clear, actionable advice.
- A track record of successfully managing legal risks, compliance initiatives, and corporate governance.
- Strong business acumen and the ability to work collaboratively across departments to meet organizational goals.
- High level of integrity, ethics, and professionalism in all aspects of work.
Education and Experience
- Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.
- Currently admitted to a state bar and eligible to practice law in that state.
- CIPP-E and CIPP-US preferred.
- Minimum of 15 years of legal experience, with at least 7-10 years in senior leadership roles (e.g., General Counsel, Senior Counsel) leading the Legal team in an in-house or corporate setting.
- Strong leadership skills with 7 years or more experience in building and managing high-performing, cross-functional teams.
- Prior experience working in-house in the technology industry required.
- In-house legal experience with a multinational company or high-growth organization.
- Strong background in international legal matters, cross-border transactions, or regulatory compliance.
Travel Requirements
- Travel for this position is occasional, typically occurring a few times a year to attend internal and external meetings.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- This position will manage and lead other members of the legal team.
Expected Salary Range: $134,500-$224,000
This position is a hybrid role with a requirement of being in the office 3 days a week.
